The South Island’s West Coast is its wildest edge: rainforest tumbling down to a rugged coastline, and two of the most accessible glaciers on Earth — Fox and Franz Josef — flowing almost to sea level.

## Fox Glacier & Franz Josef

These twin glacier towns, about 25 minutes apart, are the coast’s headline act. You can:

-   **Walk to the glacier valleys** on well-marked tracks (the ice faces retreat, so viewpoints change).
-   **Heli-hike** — a helicopter lifts you onto the ice for a guided walk among the seracs and blue crevasses.
-   **Scenic flights** over the glaciers and Aoraki/Mount Cook.

## Beyond the ice

-   **Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks)** — layered limestone stacks and blowholes.
-   **Hokitika** — pounamu (greenstone) carving and the wild Hokitika Gorge.
-   **Lake Matheson** — mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook on a calm morning.

## When to go

**Tiaki tip:** Glacier faces are dangerous and access changes with conditions — only go onto the ice with a licensed guide, and heed all safety signage in the valleys.

## FAQ

### Can you still walk on the glaciers?

Independent access to the ice is restricted for safety as the glaciers retreat. Guided heli-hikes are the way onto the ice; valley walks reach viewpoints on foot.

### Fox or Franz Josef — which is better?

Both are spectacular and close together. Franz Josef town has more services; Fox is quieter. Many travellers see both.
