## Getting there is part of the decision

Milford is remote. You’ll cruise from one of several starting points:

-   **From Te Anau** (~2 h drive) — the closest base; best for a relaxed morning.
-   **From Queenstown by coach** (~4–5 h each way) — a very long day, but no self-driving on the mountainous Milford Road.
-   **Self-drive from Queenstown/Te Anau** — flexible, but the Milford Road demands care (and can close after snow/avalanche risk).

Several run the fiord, including **RealNZ** and **Southern Discoveries**, with boats ranging from larger scenic vessels to smaller nature-focused cruises. Smaller boats get closer to the waterfalls and feel less crowded; larger ones are comfortable and often better value. All cover the same jaw-dropping scenery.

## Best time of day — and don’t fear the rain

Early morning and late afternoon are quietest and best for light. And here’s the counterintuitive part: **Milford is spectacular in the rain**. Wet weather brings hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascading down the cliffs — arguably more magical than a clear day.
