Most short-stay visitors to New Zealand don’t need a traditional visa — but nearly everyone now needs an NZeTA, and there’s a tourism levy bundled with it. Here’s what the rules mean in plain English.
NZeTA vs visa: what’s the difference?
The NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is not a visa — it’s an electronic authorisation for travellers from visa-waiver countries (most of Europe, the UK, the US, Canada, Japan and many more) and for cruise passengers. If your country is visa-waiver, you request an NZeTA online or via the official app before you fly. If it isn’t, you’ll need an actual visitor visa instead.
How long can you stay?
- Most visa-waiver visitors: up to 3 months per visit on an NZeTA.
- UK passport holders: historically up to 6 months.
- The NZeTA itself is typically valid for around 2 years (or until your passport expires), across multiple visits.
The IVL levy — budget for it
When you apply for an NZeTA you also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL), which funds conservation and tourism infrastructure. It’s collected alongside the NZeTA, so factor both costs into your pre-trip budget.
How to apply — step by step
- Apply through the official channel (Immigration NZ website or the official NZeTA app) — avoid lookalike third-party sites that overcharge.
- Pay the NZeTA fee plus the IVL.
- Apply ahead of time — processing can take up to around 72 hours, sometimes longer.
- Travel on the same passport you applied with; the NZeTA is linked to it electronically.
What the NZeTA doesn’t do
It’s an entry authorisation, not health cover. New Zealand’s ACC scheme covers accidental injury even for visitors, but not illness, evacuation or repatriation — which is exactly why you still need travel insurance.
