Rental companies constantly need vehicles moved between depots. If your dates and route line up, you can drive a fully-equipped campervan for as little as NZD $1 a day — sometimes with free fuel or a ferry crossing thrown in.
What a relocation deal actually is
New Zealand’s rental fleets are lopsided by season. Everyone wants to pick up in Auckland and drop in Queenstown in summer, which leaves depots short of vehicles at one end and overflowing at the other. To rebalance, companies offer relocation deals: heavily discounted one-way hires where you do the repositioning for them.
In exchange for the near-free daily rate, you accept three constraints: a fixed pick-up and drop-off depot, a tight time window (often 24–72 hours), and a set direction of travel. Get those to match your plans and it’s one of the cheapest ways to see the country.

The catches to check before you book
- Time allowance. Some give you a single day for a 900 km leg — doable but not a holiday. Others allow extra days for a small fee, which is where the real value is.
- Fuel. A few deals include a fuel allowance; most don’t.
- Ferry. If the route crosses Cook Strait, check whether the Interislander or Bluebridge crossing is included or paid by you.
- Deposit & excess. You still pay a bond and carry the standard insurance excess — reducible with a cover option.
- Age & licence. Usually 21+ with a full licence held 12 months; an International Driving Permit if your licence isn’t in English.

Can I do a South-to-North relocation?
